100 App Redesigns: The Manifesto
Starting today, Sept 26, I will be posting a new app redesign for 100 days to my blog. These redesigns will consist of one to two screens and will abide by the following ten rules:
- Each day of the week will be assigned a specific type of app.
Monday: Messaging (direct/private communication)
Tuesday: Travel/Vacation
Wednesday: Dating
Thursday: Ride-Sharing
Friday: Food Delivery
Saturday: Social Media (indirect/public communication)
Sunday: Money-Sending
2. Each redesign will be shared with a brief explanation of research, thought process, etc.
3. Each redesign, including research, should take around one hour.
4. There will be a theme for each week. These themes will vary in practicality and seriousness but will hopefully provide interesting insight. Week 1 (Days 1–7) will focus on the theme The Past. I will announce Week 2’s theme in the Week 1 Summary.
5. Each week will have a summary, describing the process, challenges, and discoveries from that week. These will be posted to both the blog and Medium, as well as a Behance post.
6. The redesigns will not focus on practicality or trends, but instead on creating interesting and unique interactions within the apps, related to the theme.
7. Simply doing aesthetic changes is not acceptable. Each redesign must make the app behave differently, based on the theme.
8. Each redesign will be presented in a way that expands on the design. Simple screenshots are not acceptable.
9. Redesigns and presentation should be experimental and playful. This is not a branding exercise. Focus will be on the type of app, not specific examples.
10. Once a month, there will be a more in-depth investigation into an idea that surfaced. Those investigations may manifest as deeper redesigns, articles, or another type of media that is relevant.
Please follow my blog at theodorerichards.co for daily updates. The first post, “James Cook’s Personal Exploration App,” has been posted.
My Medium and Behance will be updated weekly, starting next week.
I know this is going to be tough, but I’ve been meaning to do this for a while, and I think it’s finally time to get my ass into gear and just do it.
The blog will have an “Ask” section, so please feel free to message me on there with any questions you have or respond to this or the follow up Medium posts I will be doing.
Also, thank you to everyone who read, shared, clapped for, and responded to my article “Redesigning Apple’s Mail App for Myself.” It was my first article, and the response was amazing and really encouraged me to keep doing this. So thank you.
